Which classes do you teach online?
Management 5320: "Leading and Managing People"
Why did you start teaching?
After entering The University of South Carolina at the age of 18, I went to work for the Assistant Dean of the College of Business as a student worker where I fell in love with academia. I have enjoyed a long career with no regrets. Two of my three children are also pursing academic careers and the youngest daughter may follow in time as a result of my passion.
What's the best advice that you ever received?
Dean Joseph Green told me while fishing that he attributed his 36 years as a successful Dean to never having been vindictive. Managers need to have a thick skin.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
Work hard and enjoy the journey.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
The poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the profession in which you teach?
Hard work, critical thinking skill, written and oral communication skills, high ethical standards, empathy toward others and self-reflection are important qualities for successful managers. Intellectual honesty and the ability to laugh at oneself are important qualities as well.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?
The biggest challenge that managers face today is the increasing level of competition while attempting work, family and life balance.
How do you see online learning affecting the future of education?
My students have taught me that online learning can be highly effective. Every semester, I walk away impressed with what they achieve through their tenacity and hard work.
